I'm Proactive, so I Focus on What I Can Control
Happiness is something that we all strive for, but sometimes it can feel out of reach. The good news is that there are habits that we can cultivate to increase our overall happiness. One such habit is to focus on what we can control, which can help us feel more empowered and fulfilled.
Habit
Focusing on what we can control involves directing our attention and efforts towards the things that we have the power to influence. It's about identifying and accepting the things that we cannot change and instead, channeling our energy towards what we can change.
Goal
A simple daily goal to practice the habit of focusing on what you can control could be to start your day by writing down three things that you can control and three things that you cannot control.
Implementation
Here are 3 simple steps to implement this habit:
- Create a designated space for your daily goal: Dedicate a specific notebook or section in your planner for writing down the things you can and cannot control. This will make it easier to stay organized and track your progress over time.
- Start with what's on your mind: If you find it difficult to come up with things you can and cannot control, begin by writing down the worries or concerns that are currently on your mind. This can help you identify areas where you may be feeling stuck or powerless, and begin to shift your focus towards what you can control.
- Use positive language: When writing down the things you can control, use positive language and focus on what you can do rather than what you can't do. This will help you stay motivated and proactive throughout the day.
- Take action on what you can control: Throughout the day, whenever you find yourself worrying about something outside of your control, remind yourself of the things you can control and take action on them. This could be to stay positive and focused on your work.
Three things I can control:
- My attitude towards work today

Three things I cannot control:
- The weather today
- The traffic on my way to work
- The actions of my coworkers
