As a coach, active listening is a vital skill to master. It's tempting to get caught up in your own thoughts and prioritize your own words, but this mindset can hinder meaningful connections and block potential progress. By prioritizing active listening, you'll unlock new levels of understanding, communication, and opportunities for personal growth.

Habit

The habit of active listening involves fully engaging in the conversation, paying attention to the speaker, and trying to understand their perspective. It requires you to be present and focused, putting aside your own thoughts and opinions to truly listen to the other person.

Goals

I will practice active listening by setting aside 10 minutes each day to have a conversation with someone and actively listen to them without interrupting or judging. I will use paraphrasing to demonstrate that I have listened and understood.

Implementation

Be present and attentive

When engaging in a conversation, put aside any distractions and focus on the speaker. Give them your full attention, maintain eye contact and avoid interrupting them. To avoid being distracted by your own thoughts, repeat the words of the other person in your own mind every 1 – 2 phrases.

Paraphrase

Restate the speaker's message in your own words to show that you understand their perspective and respond in a way that demonstrates that you have actively listened. Use the following phrase: "So if I understood correctly, what you're saying is..."
